About the event
After extensive repairs following the bomb damage of the second world war, St John’s was reopened for the 1951 Festival of Britain, marking the occasion with an array of chamber choir concerts. We mark the 75th anniversary of this important event in a concert of beautiful choral music which also reflects on the original opening of the church in 1824 and its early musical history. The composer Samuel Sebastion Wesley was organist at the church from 1829, and it seems his great friend Felix Mendelssohn visited the church during this period in one of his visits to London. As well as works by them, we also include a range of other beautiful choral music from the period.
